A few weeks ago, Carla Bruce contacted me to ask if I would help publicize the upcoming basic training course for the Virginia Master Naturalist Program.
Last year, she had read about the activity in this column, took the class and has volunteered to serve as the 2008 – 2009 coordinator. For anyone who wants to learn more about the natural history of Central Virginia, this will provide a fine opporunity to develop your skills.
The Virginia Master Naturalist Program is a statewide group of volunteers, with an aim of providing education, outreach and service for the beneficial management of natural resources within their communities. There are currently 25 chapters around the state. Anyone may participate; The only qualifications needed are a curiosity about the natural world and a desire to share your knowledge.
The process for becoming a certified Virginia Master Naturalist usually takes between six months and a year, and includes a basic training course as well as 40 hours of volunteer service. In our area, a training course is for Sept. 10 through Dec. 10, with meetings every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 9:30.
Among the topics to be covered are a review of the physiography of Virginia, basic concepts of ecology, an introduction to geology, an overview of native plants and animals and basic resource management principles. Much of the course will be devoted to hands-on activities, and four field trips are scheduled throughout the area.
If you are wondering what type of activities might constitute the 40 hours of volunteer service, the opportunities are varied. If you enjoy working with young people, you might want to offer assistance to public schools or through projects at municipal or state parks. Volunteers are needed to help maintain trails or restore wildlife habitat. Those interested in scientific research can help collect water quality data or participate in various wildlife studies.
The cost for the class is $100, with registration and payment due by July 31. To learn more or to obtain an application, go to http://www.virginiamasternaturalist.org/centralvirginia.html
