A local employment fair Tuesday will aim to link military veterans to employers who could use their skills.
The event coincides with the annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans Department of Virginia being held in Lynchburg next week.
Cynthia Madison, the DAV’s employment chairperson, said about 30 employers have registered. They include several federal agencies, including the FBI and the IRS, the Lynchburg and Portsmouth police departments, and several local companies.
The local companies include English Construction, Liberty University, and Centennial Broadcasting, the North Carolina-based company that owns WLNI (105.9 FM) in Lynchburg.
Larry Wrenn, veterans employment representative with the Virginia Employment Commission, said e-mails have been sent to 1,500 veterans in the Lynchburg area to make them aware of the event.
Madison said finding employment is a challenge for some veterans. The job fair “gives a veteran who has been away for a while, maybe in Iraq or Afghanistan, an opportunity to see what’s out there.”
Wrenn said the event is specifically designed for veterans and their families, but other members of the public would not be turned away.
