Va. unemployment rate fell in April

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s unemployment fell slightly in April to 3.3 percent.
The Virginia Employment Commission said Wednesday the decline from 3.9 percent in March was the result of several factors. They included an uptick in seasonal employment such as construction and tourism-related hiring.
Virginia’s unadjusted April 2008 rate was up from the 2007 jobless rate of 2.7 percent. This April’s mark was below the U.S. average of 4.8 percent.
All 10 Virginia metropolitan areas reported lower unemployment in April. The Danville area showed the most improvement — down better than a full percentage point to 6.3 percent.
Northern Virginia’s rate was down to 2.6 percent in April, the lowest among metropolitan areas.
