Virginia’s unemployment rate matched a five-year high of 4.4 percent in July.
The Virginia Employment Commission reported today that the state’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate rose 0.2 of a percentage point from the June rate.
June’s unemployment rate increased 1.1 percentage points, also a five-year high.
One reason for the higher July rate was summer furloughs, which were 17 percent greater because of the slowing economy. The July 4 holiday traditionally has the highest number of furloughs.
Virginia’s jobless rate was below the U.S. seasonally unadjusted jobless rate for July 2008 of 6.0 percent.
