RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The tomato has taken a tumble in Virginia.
According to the annual Virginia Agricultural Statistics Bulletin, soybeans are the state’s largest cash crop, bringing in $135.8 million last year. That was enough to put them ahead of corn, tomatoes and tobacco.
Most of Virginia’s tomato crop is cultivated on the Eastern Shore. In 2006, the plump red field crop accounted for $123 million in cash receipts. That number fell to $66 million last year.
One reason was the decision by a large producer, Taylor & Fulton Co., to pull out of the Virginia market. The company blamed the lack of a reliable, legal work force.
The bulletin put gross case receipts from all crops and livestock last year at $2.95 billion.
