Central Virginia Community College and Dominion Virginia Power are now offering a program in which participants can earn a nuclear industry-related degree while receiving a monthly stipend and a scholarship for tuition, fees and books.

Enrolled students will earn an associate in applied science degree in Nuclear Support Technologies from CVCC’s main campus in Lynchburg while working a paid internship in the nuclear industry.

Graduates who meet academic and job performance requirements will be encouraged to join Dominion’s Nuclear Business Unit and earn a bachelor’s degree through the company’s educational assistance program.

The health physics profession includes job opportunities in power generation, medicine, industry, education, environmental protection, and research and enforcement of government regulations. Health physics technicians perform duties at nuclear power plants such as conducting radiation surveys, analyzing environmental samples, and inspecting, calibrating and maintaining instruments.

CVCC President Darrel Staat said in a news release that the program was “a significant step towards Lynchburg becoming a national training site for the nuclear industry.”

Applicants interested in the program can receive further information by calling CVCC’s Mark Zaccole at (434) 832-7804 or Dominion recruiting at (804) 771-4845.
